When Emmerdale newcomer Gail Loman arrived, fan theories about her backstory flourished online. First it was rumoured that she was Zoe Tate’s secret daughter, then fans feared that Gail had an evil plot to infiltrate the Dingles by getting a job in the Woolpack.
While her character was getting a grilling in online forums, actress Rachael Gill-Davis was enjoying the speculation which began since she first arrived in the Dales back in May. “No one trusts a character on a soap initially, do they?” laughs Rachael. “It was so interesting to go on social media where everyone was going ‘sack her!’ and getting their pitchforks out.” What Gail had actually been hiding was a secret child with Charity Dingle’s son Ryan Stocks (James Moore).
Gail had given Oscar up for adoption when he was just weeks old and she hadn’t seen him since. That is until Oscar’s adoptive mother, Sophie, got in touch.
It turns out Oscar is ill, he needs a bone marrow transplant, and Gail is a match. “I can’t imagine the shock you’d have if a child came back into your life after 13 years, only to find out that he’s ill,” sighs Rachael. “Gail’s petrified at the prospect that she could lose Oscar all over again.
