Matty Barton, portrayed by Ash Palmisciano, has been grappling with fear while on remand in prison, and in the latest twist of Emmerdale's plot, he was hospitalised after an attack.

Since his incarceration for the accidental stabbing of Samson Dingle (played by Sam Hall), Matty has been living in dread of other inmates discovering that he is transgender, which could potentially make him a target.

In a fortunate turn of events, after confiding in his cellmate Les about his past identity, Matty gained an ally in Les who offered him some protection against the more aggressive prisoners.

Les, played by Stacey J Gough, vowed to keep Matty's secret. However, during a visitation, Amy Wyatt (Natalie Ann Jamieson) inadvertently revealed to Robbo (John O'Neill) that Matty is transgender, setting the stage for subsequent trouble.
