Emma Raducanu was crowned winner of BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards 2021 at the ceremony held on Sunday. The 19-year-old captured the hearts of the nation when she defied the odds to win the US Open title back in September.
Raducanu – who was born in Bromley – won the main accolade ahead of the likes of Olympic diver Tom Daley and swimmer Adam Peaty.Fans congratulated the tennis star for her award win on social media, but it was a tweet by Michael Owen which caught many people’s attention.
Owen congratulated Raducanu in a tweet which strangely accompanied a picture of himself winning the SPOTY award back in 1998.It read: “Congratulations to @EmmaRaducanu who thoroughly deserves to be crowned Sports Personality of the Year 2021..
