Eight people rescued after fire breaks out at flats in major emergency operation

Eight people were rescued by emergency crews after a fire broke out in Oldham. The blaze broke out at a property on Middlefield at around 2.30am today (Saturday).

The fire spread to a flat block, the Manchester Evening News understands. Four fire engines raced to the scene. A number of police and ambulance vehicles were also pictured on the road, which is just off Keb Lane. A spokesperson for the fire service said eight people and one dog were rescued. It has not been confirmed whether any of these were seriously injured.

Crews used hose reels and a turntable ladder to make the area safe. They worked on the scene for almost three hours. In a statement, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "At just before 2.30am today (Saturday 18 May), fire crews were called to reports of a fire at a property on Middlefield, Oldham. "Four engines from Oldham, Hollins, Chadderton, Stalybridge and the aerial appliance from Manchester Central quickly attended the scene.
