Mobile phone customers on EE, O2, Three and Vodafone have been warned that they face a big price hike in the coming months, with some expected to pay as much as £120 more over the duration of their contract.

Consumer watchdog Which? said customers on Sim-only contracts face 'unpredictable' and 'unjust' price rises in the middle of their contracts, a practice which they say should be banned by Ofcom.

In April, phone companies are allowed to hike their prices by a certain percentage, which is based on inflation - either the Consumer Price Index (CPI) or the Retail Price Index (RPI) - plus an additional 3.9 per cent.

These hikes can only be avoided if customers cancel their contracts while they are still under them - but that can see them facing early exit fees of up to almost £300.
