EastEnders ' 'Dirty' Den Watts, played by the late Leslie Grantham, was one of the soap's most notorious villains. He earned his nickname through his vile treatment of his wife Angie (played by Anita Dobson) who he cheated on several times.

He even had an affair with 16-year-old Michelle Fowler (Susan Tully) with whom he fathered a child. Keen to leave the soap to embark on other acting jobs, Leslie filmed a grisly death scene for Den - but it was cut because EastEnders bosses could not bear to close the door on the character.

During the summer of 1988, Den had become involved with The Firm, an organised crime mob operating in the East End, and he was forced to flee Walford.
