New rules mean Winter Fuel Payments have been stopped for millions of people. Under the Labour government chancellor Rachel Reeves has said the benefit which pays up to £300 towards energy costs will now only be paid to people of State Pension age on a means-tested benefit.
Previously it was paid to all State Pensioners however the change means millions will now no longer be eligible. One of the key benefits which opens the door to the payment is Pension Credit but there are up to 800,000 people who could qualify for this who currently do not claim it.
To qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment people must be claiming a relevant means-tested benefit, such as Pension Credit, in the qualifying week.
This year that is September 16-22. And to be in time for this year's Winter Fuel Payment people need to apply for Pension Credit before the deadline - Sunday, September 22 .
