Conservative proposals to scrap the cash Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and replace it with a voucher-based system have been confirmed as under "review", as the new Labour-run Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) confirms that more than 16,000 people responded to a consultation on the changes.
Newly appointed Minister for Social Security and Disabilities at the DWP, Sir Stephen Timms MP, confirmed the large response as Labour weighs up how it will tackle the ballooning benefits bill.
The department has said it will take its time to review the public's comments on the Tory 'Modernising support for independent living: the health and disability' Green Paper, with an eye to "considering our own approach to social security in due course".
His remarks were in response to a query from Labour colleague Cat Smith regarding when the DWP intends to publish its findings from the consultation which concluded on July 22.
