People in hundreds of areas across England and Wales can get a £25 payment from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). The Cold Weather Payment scheme runs from November to the end of March and provides cash boosts for eligible households every time the temperature drops below a certain level.

Since the start of January, the payments have been triggered in 645 postcode areas across the north of England, the Midlands, Wales and the south east.

The payments, which are paid to households on certain benefits, are triggered when the temperature is forecast to be, or recorded as, 0C for a period of seven consecutive days.

Each postcode area in the UK is linked to a weather station and the Met Office informs the DWP when the threshold is met in a certain area.
