A number of buildings in Dumfries were lit up in purple to celebrate World Polio Day last week thanks to the town’s two Rotary Clubs.
Theouncil headquarters, The Cairndale Hotel and The Venue nightclub took part with the colour representing the mark put on children’s fingers to show they have been vaccinated.
The Rotary Club of Dumfries and Dumfries Devorgilla thanks each of the venues for their support to promote World Polio Day, which is held on the birthday of Jonas Salk, a celebrated American virologist who developed one of the first successful polio vaccines.
Andrew Clark of Dumfries Devorgilla Rotary Club said the eradication of polio has been an aim of Rotary International for more than 40 years, originally with a tag of Polio Plus.
