A recruitment drive to help deal with the region’s potholed roads was launched this week. Jobs were advertised on Tuesday and next Thursday there is an open door event taking place at The Bridge between 10am and 2pm for potential candidates.

Prospective employees will get the chance to speak to council staff about career opportunities in the service, what the job involves and get help with applications.

Councillor Ian Blake, chairman of the communities committee said: “Dumfries and Galloway Council is responsible for one of the biggest road networks in Scotland covering 4,202km, which are the vital arteries that connect communities and our economy across the region. “We are ensuring maximum benefit and value for money by taking a staged approach to spending the investment. “ The posts currently advertised are the start of the journey, and there are many more innovations on the way to help us improve our region’s road network.” At February’s full council meeting an additional £30 million of funding over the next five years was agreed for the roads department to target the blight of potholes on the region’s roads.

The funding will help with the recruitment of 25 workers with the council also weighing up buying a JCB Pothole Pro which can fix a defect in minutes.
