A drunken farmer destroyed 80 metres of hedgerow before smashing into a tree and writing off his £30,000 car on the way home from the pub.

Hugh Stewart was found lying unconscious across the passenger seat and failed a roadside breath test after being rescued from the vehicle by firefighters.

Stewart claimed he veered across the road and lost control of the Ford Ranger Wildtrak as he tried to catch an item rolling off the passenger seat.

Perth Sheriff Court was told that Stewart had downed several drinks in the pub with a friend he had not seen for months because of the pandemic.
