Drink driver jailed for three years after horror crash in Newmains

A speeding drink driver who had to be rescued from his blazing car after a horror crash has been jailed for three years.Andrew Smart was racing along at 85 miles an hour in a built-up area of Newmains when he lost control of the Ford Focus and ploughed into two other vehicles.Smart, two of his passengers and another driver suffered serious injuries.The 31-year-old admitted driving dangerously at a “grossly excessive” speed while under the influence.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

He was driving at approximately 85 miles an hour.“He tried to turn left on to Main Street but was unable to maintain control and his car collided with a Vauxhall Corsa that was waiting at the junction.“The accused’s car continued for a short distance and collided head on with an Audi.“Smart’s car caught fire and members of the public stopped to help get him out.”One of his two male passengers suffered a broken arm and leg as well as burns to his torso and legs.
