Dramatic footage shows a former care home engulfed in flames and smoke after a blaze broke out. The fire started in an empty building just off Abbey Hey Lane in Gorton at around 9.30pm last night (Sunday).
It is understood that the building was St George's, a former residential home which has been boarded up and empty for a number of years. Smoke could be seen billowing out of the roof area and boarded-up windows as crews worked to extinguish the blaze. A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said today that firefighters remain at the scene.
They are dampening down the remaining hotspots. The cause of the fire is not yet known, though fire investigation officers will be carrying out an investigation, the spokesperson added.
