Dog walker, 79, killed by flying tyre was a 'caring and devoted dad and grandad'

A "devoted" 79-year-old dog walker died after being struck by a flying tyre in a freak roadside accident. Peter Smith was hit as he walked his pet on A38 near Newton Abbot, Devon, on Tuesday morning.

A wheel of a Mitsubishi L200 came loose and hurtled into the man on the pavement next to a busy dual carriageway. Police say vehicle was towing a livestock trailer and the pensioner was pronounced dead at the scene.

His dog was also located soon after and is now safe with his family. In a statement, those he left behind paid tribute to tragic Peter.
