A mum and grandma believed she only had pins and needles before being told by doctors that her worsening symptoms would go back to normal, says her son.

Now, she is waiting for a diagnosis that will likely be life changing. The 50-year-old's symptoms started when she experienced slow speech and felt pins and needles in her limbs in October 2022.

Joanne Katchi was taken to hospital and was told by doctors that it could be a 'temporary lapse' and would return to normal, but then her speech started getting worse and she became unable to use her hands, said son, Dan.

Further hospital tests showed the signs that her condition could actually be life-altering. Joanne's results showed a neurological issue, which doctors believe at this stage is either motor neurone disease (MND) or spasticity: MND is a rare condition that progressively damages parts of the nervous system and eventually leads to death, whereas spasticity is a condition that results in an abnormal increase in muscle tone or stiffness, which can interfere with movement, speech, and cause pain.
