British producers and directors are coming together to forge a forum with BBC Studios and ITV Studios in order to address the significant challenges posed by the sector.

The Directors and Producers Forum will meet for the first time on December 13 and bi-annually thereafter, discussing issues including increased costs of production, changes in viewing habits and diversity initiatives.

The new forum replaces previous less structured liaison between directors and producers and will be led by senior reps from trade bodies Directors UK and Pact, with input from BBC Studios and ITV Studios execs. “The purpose of the Directors and Producers Forum is to create a much needed platform, away from the day-to-day pressures of production, for directors and producers to work collaboratively and openly,” said Directors UK boss Andy Harrower. “Directors, as part of the lead creative team on any TV production, have insights, experience and expertise which is invaluable.

In looking at the bigger picture together, we can jointly deal with some of the challenges we face.” Pact Deputy CEO Max Rumney added that “in an increasingly challenging world of production, clear communication and sharing of ideas will help all parties to navigate their way through challenges.” The move comes with UK TV production in a tight spot.
