The New Year began in style at Crossmichael on Sunday. More than 70 people took part in the traditional Dee Dip, rushing into the cold waters at Crossmichael Marina.

Around 100 more people stayed on dry land watching the action, with the weather much improved from the days leading up to the event.

Organiser Jim McLelland said: “The water had dropped quite a lot from Saturday. “We thought we would have to mark it out with buoys but when we went down it was fine and it was a lovely morning. “It was 7.5 degrees in the water, which is quite tropical for this time of year! “The longest anyone managed was just over five minutes.

I think people are being sensible and they are learning that if you stay in too long, it bites into your core and takes a while to recover.” Among those taking part was Crossmichael’s Suzy Rook.
