Death of Ayrshire bus driver being treated as murder investigation

Police have announced tonight that a fatal horror smash on the A77 is now being treated as a murder investigation.Bus driver Gordon Stirling died following the smash near the A719 junction that also involved a white Ford Transit van.The 42-year-old van driver sustained serious injuries in the smash that took place on Monday, August 14.Five ambulances, two specialists medical teams and an air ambulance were all scrambled to the major incident shortly after 5.30pm on Monday.However, Mr Stirling succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.Detective Chief Inspector Jennifer McCulloch said: “Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.“Our thoughts remain with the family of Gordon Stirling and we are providing them with support as investigation progresses.“Anyone who witnessed the incident or who dashcam footage which may assist is asked to call 101, quoting incident number 3147 of Monday, 14 August, 2023.”Two bus passengers, a 68-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man, were taken to hospital by ambulance as a precaution and later discharged.The bus involved in the smash was a Stagecoach service 4 which travels between Kilmarnock and Glasgow.

Emergency services were scrambled to the scene with investigators keeping the road closed for almost 10 hours, finally reopening at around 3.30am the following day.Fiona Doherty, managing director of Stagecoach West Scotland said on Sunday: “It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of our colleague Gordon Stirling.
