Manchester United’s 1-0 victory over West Ham on Saturday handed David De Gea his fifth Premier League clean sheet of the season.
As it stands, there are eight keepers in the division who have secured more clean sheets than the United shot-stopper. That at first glance looks like an unremarkable return, and perhaps a surprising one for fans who have watched the 31-year-old throughout the campaign so far.
In the eyes of many, despite United’s turbulent campaign, De Gea has been one of the team’s top performers. Yet that isn’t reflective in terms of the number of clean sheets he has accumulated.
Yet this merely highlights why judging a keeper on clean sheets alone is often a flawed measurement and doesn’t take into account the quality of the defence ahead.
