At the 2024 BAFTAs, David Beckham found himself in a spot of bother with BBC viewers due to an unfortunate choice of words.The footballing legend, 48, presented on stage at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday evening.
He was there to announce the winner of the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer Award - which turned out to be Savanah Leaf for her film Earth Mama.However, he upset fans when he referred to 'football' as 'soccer', the Mirror reports.They quickly took to social media, formerly known as Twitter, and railed against him for 'pandering to the Americans' with the US version of the sport's name.One viewer posted: "That might be true in football, or soccer-' DAVID BECKHAM YOU ARE ON THE BAFTAS DON'T YOU DARE PANDER TO THE AMERICANS!!!"Others joined in. "David Beckham calling football soccer at a British awards show," grumbled one.
Another said: "No David you were right the first time... it's called football!!" And another was incredulous: "Don't you dare say soccer, David.
Who even are you?" Besides lending his voice to the event, David mingled with some of the biggest names in cinema. Numerous high-profile productions and performers were nominated that night, while Prince William also attended in his role as BAFTA President.Beckham had a friendly chat with the royal and they were seen shaking hands.
