A former soldier who escaped from prison by clinging to the underside of a food delivery truck has been jailed after being convicted of spying.

Daniel Khalife was found guilty of spying for Iran following a trial last November. He previously admitted escaping from HMP Wandsworth and going on the run for three days.

The 23-year-old former British soldier was sentenced to 14 years and three months in prison at Woolwich Crown Court today (February 3).

The judge, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb, labelled Khalife "a dangerous fool" as she sentenced him. She claimed he had been motivated by “a selfish desire to show off”.
