Dance teacher's service to young people in Perth rewarded with MBE

Perth dance teacher Julie Young has had her dedication to her students recognised with an MBE. The dance school founder, artistic director, choreographer and student mentor was proud to be one of a handful of Perthshire people nominated and honoured in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List revealed this week.

Julie (52) will receive her medal for “services to dance and to young people in Perth.” “I can’t believe it, I feel humbled and honoured,” she said.She has 100 dancers from age three upwards attending her classes each week.It is a fitting recognition of how she is far more than simply a teacher.

Julie has shown an interest in her students’ onward development as people - regardless of where their dance skills take them.Julie offers all the genres, introducing students to ballet, Scottish dancing, tap and jazz.

On a national level she has successfully worked to renew and invigorate Scottish national dance and Highland dancing.These days leading up to the Platinum Jubilee celebrations have seen her racing around preparing her students to entertain at Perth Concert Hall.
