Ministers have been blasted for “forgetting” care homes after they got just 10% of the protective kit they needed in the first wave.
A damning report today says social care was left short of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) last Spring because the government decided to prioritise the NHS.
When fresh PPE was ordered, hundreds of millions of pounds were “wasted” on kit that couldn’t be used - from rotten face masks to gowns infested with insects.
Meanwhile many lives were lost because of the decision to discharge 25,000 patients from hospitals into care homes, The Commons Public Accounts Committee declared.
