Originating from India and southern Asia, oil pulling has been around for thousands of years. The method involves swishing edible oil in the mouth for a period and then spitting it out, similar to traditional mouthwash.
Coconut oil is often the go-to for this technique. However, the American Dental Association has noted a lack of scientific evidence to back up claims about oil pulling's benefits for oral hygiene or health in general.
Despite this, people who carry out the practice swear by its positive effects on brighter smiles and overall mouth health. London-based dentist Dr Shaadi Manouchehri weighed in on the topic via TikTok, addressing the potential upsides and her "one problem" with how some approach the concept.
