A dad who drunkenly attacked a “good samaritan” coming to the rescue of a member of the public has been spared jail. Robert Williams, 39, had been out drinking in the centre of Horwich over the festive period in 2018 when his group encountered another set of friends enjoying a night on the town.

A fight broke out, and innocent bystander Alan Heaton was punched so hard by Williams that he needed to go to hospital for stitches after he came to check on a woman he heard shouting in distress.
