Crews tape off Manchester city centre street after blaze in high rise building

Emergency services rushed to a city centre flat this evening following reports of a blaze. Fire crews were called to a high rise building on Whitworth Street in Manchester just before 6:30pm (August 20).

Six fire engines from Moss Side, Salford central, Gorton and Manchester central fire station were called to the scene. Crews have been in the area for an hour and a half making the scene safe.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just before 6.30pm this evening (Saturday 20 th August), six fire engines from Moss Side, Salford central, Gorton and Manchester central fire station were called to reports of a building fire involving a high rise building on Whitworth Street West, Manchester. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatuses are using two jets, a smoke curtain and other specialist equipment to extinguish the fire.” “Firefighters have been in attendance for around an hour and a half and are still at the scene.” Reports from the scene indicated the blaze started from a BBQ on a balcony, however this has not been officially confirmed.
