Couples who had children before getting married warned over little known law that could land them with a fine

Couples who get married after having children together could unwittingly face a fine due to a little known legal requirement.

Research from wedding vendor Hitched has shown that one in four couples have children before they marry. These people could face a fine due to a specific clause in the Legitimacy Act 1976.

Hitched teamed up with Blacks Solicitors to warn parents that they are legally required to re-register their shared children after they get legally married.

Josie Kirk, associate solicitor at Blacks Solicitors said:“If the parents of a child get legally married after their child has been born, it then becomes a legal requirement in the UK to re-register their child’s birth.
