A couple were injured after being dragged down a Kilmarnock street by their own car while trying to stop a man from stealing it.
Police are investigating after the shocking incident took place in Low Glencairn Street at the junctions of Maggie’s Bar and the Lidl supermarket on Wednesday, January 5.
The suspect was seen walking around the area and intentionally damaging cars when he struck a blue Mazda 2 vehicle at around 6.25pm.
The couple, who were inside the motor, became involved in an altercation with the man who jumped in their vehicle and drove off - dragging them along the road with him.The stolen car was later discovered on fire within the Tarryhold Drive area of Irvine around 35 minutes later.Officers have released a description of the thief who is believed to be between 20 and 30-years-old.He has a slim, muscular build with short hair and was wearing a blue jumper.It is believed he had previously been in the company of a woman in her twenties with a larger build.Detective Inspector Andrea Templeton from Kilmarnock CID said: “Fortunately neither of the victims were seriously injured, but this was still a very frightening ordeal for them and it was made all the more distressing because of the theft of their vehicle.“We are pursuing a number of lines of inquiry to identify the suspect and would ask anyone who recognises him, or who witnessed this incident, to contact police immediately.“Similarly, if your vehicle was in Lower Glencairn Street, Kilmarnock, or Taryholm Drive, Irvine during the evening of Wednesday 4 January and has dash-cam footage that may be able to assist with our investigation, then please also get in touch.” Don't miss the latest news from around Scotland and beyond - Sign up to our daily
