A woman has become the first person in Spain to be arrested for flouting the new emergency coronavirus rulings after sunbathing on grass near the seafront.

The resident was put into a police van and dashed to a station in Palma, the capital of Mallorca, which, like the Spanish mainland, is under strict curfew conditions.

She now faces a fine of up to £27,000 for civil disobedience and not complying with the State of Emergency. Neighbours reportedly complained after spotting the woman trying to top up her tan.

But the government in Spain has banned the use of all outdoor spaces and parks, as well as many beaches, as part of the containment measures to stop the flow of Covid-19.
