Coronavirus cases are surging in 93% of England with Boris Johnson poised to set out even stricter measures to combat the virus.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 292 - 93% - have seen a rise in case rates, 22 - 7% - have seen a fall, and one is unchanged, Public Health England figures show.

In today's update of the latest Covid-19 case rates for every local authority area in England, the rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people. Barking & Dagenham in London continues to have the highest rate in England, with 3,143 new cases recorded in the seven days to December 31 - the equivalent of 1,476.2 cases per 100,000 people.
