Swathes of the UK which suffered in the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic have seen their case rates shoot up in the latest figures.
There is a return to more misery in the North West, where places such as Liverpool and Knowsley, which were major Covid hotspots in the first wave, see their week-on-week case rates more than double in today;s Public Health England figures.
In Tuesday's update of the latest Covid-19 case rates for every local authority area in England, the rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.
Of the 315 local areas in England, 225 (71 per cent) have seen a rise in case rates, 89 (28 per cent) have seen a fall and one is unchanged, in the figures for the seven days to January 8.
