Covid-19 infection rates doubled in parts of Greater Manchester last week, and No10 is now warning travel bans may be needed to halt local spikes across the UK.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham yesterday warned the “R Rate” in the North West may be above one, meaning the infection is spreading.

He tweeted: “North West at 1.1. Underlines the need for caution and to follow the guidance.” Infection rates, the number of cases per 100,000 people, rose in eight of the 10 Manchester boroughs last week.

In Stockport, it rose from 14.1 to 28.4, with 83 new cases. In Bury, it rose from 9.5 to 19.5, with 37 new cases. In Tameside, it was up from 17.3 to 25.3, with 57 new cases.
