Coronation Street mirrored the thoughts of a nation on Wednesday, as Paul Foreman and Steve McDonald fumed over hospital parking prices.
In two concurrent scenes, Paul received a devastating diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease from a doctor, while Steve was visiting his daughter Amy Barlow, who'd drank a full bottle of vodka as a way of numbing the pain of her recent rape ordeal. "Some people die within three years, others live longer," the nurse explained to Paul. "The more we assess you the more information we'll have on your specific case." However, both dramas were punctured by a concern straight out of the real world; Paul buried his misery by fretting over how long he'd got left in the car park, and Steve's reaction to Amy being discharged was almost one of disappointment as he'd shelled out for two hours' worth of parking.
While the episode was airing on ITV, Twitter blew up with responses to this sneaky jab from the Corrie writers. "I'm with Steve on that one.
Hospital parking is an abusive disgrace, praying on the vulnerable at their weakest when they have no choice. Needs highlighting and addressing!*!" wrote one soap fan, as another chipped in with: "I’m with Steve, hospital parking is expensive I’d want to get my monies worth too." "I think the writer of tonight’s episode must have had some issue with hospital car parking at some point..." and "Corrie writers making a point about the extortionate hospital car parking charges," suggested a third and fourth.
