The boss of Coronation Street has spoken up after an actor said the show is not "worth watching" anymore. Fans of the soap have been vocal in recent months as Corrie dives into darker storylines, from Roy Cropper accidentally implicating himself in the apparent murder of Lauren Bolton to Paul Foreman's battle with Motor Neurone Disease and Toyah Battersby's upcoming revelation that she buried a stillborn child 20 years prior.

One fan recently wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: "I do find with Coronation Street it's lost its humour...it's one dark story after another!

And don't get me started on this new storyline with Toyah! Awful!!" Meanwhile, another commented: "This isnt coronation street we know.

Amid the backlash, John Whiston - managing director of continuing dramas and head of ITV in the North - defended the soap's storylines.
