Top cops and council bosses have explained why fences were erected around the site of the ‘red tent’ homeless camp in Manchester city centre.

The camp, which organisers said started out as a protest, was set-up around the town hall on March 23. In the weeks since, police and council officers have been seen operating in the area after organisers said they would only leave the camp if Manchester council agreed to use ‘two buildings that are used for staff training’ as temporary shelters. That means the number of tents has decreased from 37 to four, as of Thursday morning (April 18), a spokesperson added. "Everyone homeless who was rough sleeping in the St Peter's Square/Mount Street camp who was willing to accept help has been supported into temporary accommodation,” a statement from the authority added. “We have so far supported more than 100 people into accommodation since the camp was created alongside the thousands of people we help every year.” As the camp began to be dismantled, metal fences appeared around the site, erected by council officers with police also on the scene.

A spokesperson for GMP said its ‘officers weren’t involved in putting up any fences, they were there to patrol around the Town Hall and support council staff’.
