Consultation to begin on future of Kirkcudbright hospital

A consultation on the future of Kirkcudbright hospital is set to begin. It’s one of four facilities across the region mothballed during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and has never reopened.

And the permanent closure of the sites is one option that has been looked at by healthcare officials. The region’s integration joint board (IJB) opted against reopening the sites last year following the Right Care, Right Place consultation into intermediate care, opting instead to look again at the situation “following work with communities on the future role of cottage hospital sites”.

Earlier this year, options for each of Dumfries and Galloway’s home team areas was drawn up ahead of a shortlist being made for the latest consultation.

Those options included keeping Kirkcudbright, Newton Stewart, Thornhill and Moffat hospitals mothballed or closing them permanently.
