Concern over bats and green belt fail to block tennis courts plan

Plans for two courts for the new form of ‘padel’ tennis at an Altrincham golf club have been approved - despite the site’s green belt status and concerns over the effects of floodlighting on the bat population.

Trafford’s planning committee gave the go-ahead to the new courts at Dunham Forest Golf Club in the face of objections from six neighbouring residents and two of its councillors.

Councillors were told the site is dedicated green belt and is in the Devisdale Conservation Area. The application also includes fencing around the courts and eight floodlights.

A report to the committee said: “The application is considered inappropriate development within the green belt, as it cannot be said to preserve the openness of the green belt. “The applicant has put forward a number of ‘very special circumstances’, some of which the council has accepted.
