Company issues statement after furnace malfunction at plant sparks huge emergency service response

An investigation is underway to determine what caused a furnace at a heat treatment works to malfunction causing a fire and sparking a huge emergency service response.

The drama unfolded at the Wallwork plant in Bury shortly before 7:30am on Sunday morning. A fire broke out involving a production furnace that had 'failed.' Fire crews, police and paramedics raced to the scene on Lord Street, just outside the town centre, with the surrounding streets being cordoned off and people being asked to avoid the area whilst firefighters tackled the blaze, and attempted to bring the furnace down to a safe temperature. Wallwork have now issued a statement in which they thanked the emergency services and apologised for any disruption caused by the road closures.
