Community farm is keeping animals cool during intense heat

Temperatures are not expected to fall below 20℃ until Tuesday as Renfrewshire enjoys a spell of sizzling summer sunshine.Renfrewshire residents can easily find tips in order to keep cool, keep themselves and others safe, but animals need a little extra help.Animals from the smallest dog to the largest horse - can be at risk of overheating, getting sunburnt and even going into heat stroke which can sadly be fatal. Temperatures have been so high lately and when they are super high, we bring the horses in and in the shade. We will take them back out again in the night when it is cooler.“All our other fields have shelters in them and there is shade under the trees too.“In the likes of our pigs, we hose areas so there are areas of cold mud for pigs to help keep them cool.“For our wee furries indoors, we replace their water three times throughout the day.

They get fresh water in the morning, fresh water at lunch time and fresh water before we leave. They always have access to fresh, cold water throughout the day.”It is important to stay vigilant when animals are out in the high temperatures and keep a note of any changes that could show that they are in distress.Such signs are excessively and fast panting, wanting to lie down more than normal and with extreme cases, animals in distress may vomit, stumble and appear confused and
