Comedian Johnny Beattie has died at the age of 93, it has been revealed. The Scottish comedy legend, who was best known for playing Shieldinch’s loveable pensioner Malcolm Henderson in BBC soap River City, is said to have died after a short stay at St Margaret’s Hospice.
Sharing the sad news, Glasgow’s Pavilion Theatre tweeted: ‘We have just received the very sad news that Johnny Beattie has passed away. ‘Johnny was a great friend to the theatre and must have been one of the few last remaining performers from magical days of variety theatre.’ Actress Leah MacRae added: ‘My heart is sad to hear of the passing of the LEGENDARY Johnny Beattie. ‘Getting to work with him on screen will forever be a career highlight of mine.
