Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor CollegeHumor is dropping its collegiate moniker after nearly 25 years… to become Dropout. The company is officially rebranding from CollegeHumor to Dropout, the name of the ad-free, subscription streaming platform it launched in 2018.
CollegeHumor was founded in 1999 by Josh Abramson and Ricky Van Veen — back in the days before the streaming revolution — and gained traction as a free, ad-supported comedy website.
Barry Diller’s IAC/InterActiveCorp acquired CollegeHumor in 2006. Then in January 2020, IAC laid off more than 100 staffers at CollegeHumor and sold a majority stake in CH Media, parent company of CollegeHumor and Dropout to Sam Reich (pictured above), who was the company’s chief creative officer at the time.
In a video about the rebranding (watch below), Reich, now the company’s CEO, says he wasn’t sure Dropout would make it to its second year. “I won’t lie to you — I was scared.
