Rebecca Rubin Senior Film and Media Reporter Disney and Pixar are returning to Land of the Dead for “Coco 2,” which is slated to release in 2029.

Disney’s CEO Bob Iger announced the sequel during the company’s annual shareholder meeting. “While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure,” he said. “And we can’t wait to share more soon.” “Coco” director Lee Unkrich is returning to direct with Adrian Molina.

Mark Nielsen, a Pixar veteran known for “Toy Story 4” and “Inside Out 2,” will produce. The original 2017 film became a critical and commercial smash, winning two Oscars while grossing over $800 million at the global box office.

The story follows 12-year-old Miguel, who dreams of being a musician despite his family’s generations-old ban on song and dance.
