Chris Rock‘s mom, Rose, is speaking out for the first time. In a new interview, Rose broke her silence on her son getting slapped by Will Smith at the 2022 Oscars last month. Click inside to read more… While speaking with WIS, Rose said that Chris is doing well after the slap, but adding that he is “still processing” what happened. “I told someone, when Will slapped Chris, he slapped all of us, but he really slapped me,” Rose said. “When you hurt my child, you hurt me.” When asked what she would say to Will if she had the chance, Rose said, “I have no idea what I would say other than, ‘What in the world were you thinking?’ Because you did a slap, but so many things could have happened.

Chris could have stepped back and fallen. You really could have gotten taken out in handcuffs. You didn’t think. You reacted to your wife giving you the side-eye, and you went up, and you made her day because she was bowled over laughing when it happened.” After the slap, Will resigned from the Academy before the organization announced that he would be banned from attending any Oscars-related event for the next 10 years.

Also in her interview, Rose questioned Will‘s punishment. “What does that mean? You don’t even go every year,” Rose said.

She also mentioned that she didn’t think that the Academy should take away Will‘s Oscar, before adding that she’s “really, really proud” of how Chris reacted to the moment. Rose added that she didn’t think that the apology Will posted on Instagram after the slap was genuine. “I feel really bad that he never apologized,” Rose said. “His people wrote up a piece and said, ‘I apologize to Chris Rock,’ but something like that is personal.
