Three years after the heartbreak of Bury FC being kicked out of the Football League, the beautiful game has once again returned to Gigg Lane.
On a gloriously sunny April afternoon, hundreds of fans filed in through the turnstiles to watch two teams play football in the stadium for the first time since 2019.
It was the promotion chasing Bury FC Foundation Women's Team who were given the honour and they will play each of their last three games of the season at Gigg Lane.
It is hoped that men’s football can also return to the venue in the not too distant future. Outside the ground, ahead of the fixture against Fleetwood Town Wrens, there were a number of comfortingly familiar sights that were once taken for granted but have been sorely missed; fans waved flags, wore scarves around their necks and queued up at the burger van, before making their way inside.
