Charli XCX is entering her (fictional) big pop girl era. It's been announced that the British multi-hyphenate savant will write the original music for Anne Hathaway's latest film Mother Mary, where the Oscar-winning actress will play a pop star.
Coming from acclaimed director David Lowery (Gawain and the Green Knight), Mother Mary will investigate the complicated relationship between Hathaway's pop icon and the influential fashion designer who has helped shape her career, played by I May Destroy You's Michaela Coel.
Charli won't be along in giving Anne the bops, however. She'll be working alongside pop producer du jour Jack Antonoff (Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey...basically everyone making music right now) in sculpting the tunes for the film's original soundtrack.
Deadline first reported the news. Director Lowery has written the script, which will be produced by iconic indie tastemakers A24 (Hereditary, Midsommar) and which is being described as "an epic pop melodrama." We've seen a fair few stories of fictional pop stars in the last few years; notably, Lady Gaga won her first Oscar for the composition of the original song Shallow, written for 2018's A Star Is Born, in which she starred as aspiring pop singer Ally.
