Tom Rogic has achieved so much as a Celtic player - but Gordon Young says it almost never happened as he tried to snap him up for Sheffield United. The Australian midfielder has become a modern day Hoops hero since his arrival from A-League side Central Coast Mariners in 2013.Over nine years, he's claimed 15 trophies and wowed fans with his technical ability.

But back when Celtic were initially trying to sign him, Young was aiming to take him south. The Lanarkshire native - who featured for Cambuslang Rangers as a player and served as Motherwell's youth academy chief - was Sheffield United's international academy manager between 2013-15.Rogic was 21 when the Premiership giants signed him but Young had been trying to harbour a deal with Central Coast for Rogic's services.

Speaking on the 10th episode of the Lanarkshire Live Sport Podcast , Young said: "Sheffield United's owner, Kevin McCabe, owned shares in clubs in China, Hungary, India and Belgium. "He also had shares in Central Coast Mariners.

They had this group of clubs they would use to Talent ID players and filter them through the levels."Tom Rogic was one of them but we missed out because of a discrepancy over a shares issue.
