Chris Columbus finally addressed the question of how the McCallister parents could afford their lavish home in the 1990 Christmas classic. “Back then, [screenwriter John Hughes] and I had a conversation about it, and we decided on what the jobs were,” he said during an interview in December with the Hollywood Reporter.
Columbus, who was also known for directing the first two “Harry Potter” films, said that he thought O’Hara’s character, Kate McCallister, “was a very successful fashion designer,” pointing out the mannequins displayed in the house.
In the movie, Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) placed the mannequins in the window to ward off the criminals Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern).
As for husband Peter McCallister (John Heard), Columbus said, “The father could have, based on John Hughes’ own experience, worked in advertising.
