UK tourists in the Canary Islands are urged to follow safety guidance as the government maintains the ‘state of pre-alert’ due to ‘bad sea conditions’.

The popular holiday destination has been battered by strong winds throughout the week, resulting in large sea swells. An amber coastal warning is in force today, Thursday, June 30, for Lanzarote, with sea swells of up to 6m predicted.

Aemet, Spain’s national weather agency, has also issued yellow coastal warnings for the remaining islands, while yellow warnings for inland winds of up to 70km/h are forecast for Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and areas of Tenerife.

Forecasting for today, Aemet said: “Moderate to strong northeasterly wind, stronger on peaks and northwest and southeast slopes, where very strong gusts are likely, and not ruling out locally in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.” By Friday Lanzarote’s amber warning is downgraded to yellow, but coastal and wind warnings remain in force.
