UK tourists are urged to follow safety guidance as the Canary Islands government raises the alert level for Lanzarote and Fuerteventura due to ‘bad sea conditions.’ The two islands have been placed under a “state of alert for coastal phenomena”, which came into force at 6pm on Thursday, January 30.
Previously Lanzarote and Fuerteventura were under a state of “pre-alert”, which remains the case for the coastline of the other islands.
During extreme weather the Canary Islands government puts areas under ‘a state of pre-alert’ urging residents to follow precautions, but rarely raises the level to ‘state of alert’.
In a statement on its website, the government said: “The Canary Islands Government, through the General Directorate of Emergencies, has updated the situation and declared a state of alert for coastal phenomena in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura as of 6:00 p.m.
